Baidyanath Ashawagandha Frequently referred to as “Indian ginseng” because of its rejuvenating properties. Helps maintain a healthy balance between the nervous system, endocrine glands and immune system, thus reducing the harmful effects of long-term stress on the body. Traditionally referred to as an aphrodisiac. It is used in the treatment of shukra kshaya or impotency and also to manage vata rogas. Ashwagandha is a plant. The name Ashwagandha is from the Sanskrit language and is a combination of the word ashva, meaning horse, and gandha, meaning smell. The root has a strong aroma that is described as “horse-like.” Traditionally, it is believed that a person who consumes this herbal medicine will gain horse-like strength and vitality. It is also referred to as Withania Somnifera(Latin name), Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry.
In Ayurvedic, Indian, and Unani medicine, Ashwagandha is described as “Indian ginseng.” Ashwagandha is also used in traditional African medicine for a variety of ailments. The main parts useful for medicinal purposes are root and berry. Ashwagandha soothes and calms down the stressed mind and nerves. It relieves nervous exhaustion, brain fag, loss of memory, and loss of muscular energy. It helps to normalize the sympathetic tone that is increased in Stress, Anxiety and Depression. Ashwagandha grows in temperate climates. It grows up to a height of 5000 feet in Western India and the Himalayan regions. The stems of ashwagandha are around 3 to 4 feet in height. One plant survives for up to 4 to 5 years. The leaves are bowl-shaped, small and without thorns. It remains green for 12 months near big trees and ponds. Ashwagandha stem contains a fiber-like texture. The leaves are oval-shaped, 2 to 4 inches long and contain fiber. The flowers are blooming at the base of the stems are small, somewhat long with a chimney shape and yellowish-green in color. The flowers bloom from the base of the leaves and become red when wipe. The seeds are small, heart-shaped, smooth and flat. The roots are rough, white from within, strong, transparent, thick and one to one and a half feet long.. The seeds are sown in rainy season and harvested in the spring season.

This medicine should be taken with different anupan to treat different diseases. ashwakanchuki rasa is also known as ashwacholi, ghodacholi etc.
This medicine is useful in fever, respiratory illness, enlargement of the liver, spleen due to aggravated kapha inside the body. In case, diseases are due to pitta dosha the medicine causes more harm than benefit.
